Playa Esperanza is so peaceful yet not far from all the exciting things to see and do. In walking distance are the famous mayan ruins of Tulum. A 10 min drive brings you to the beautiful Tulum Town and its authentic, traditional atmosphere, made of little restaurants, bars and boutiques where you’ll enjoy delicious and cheap local food, typical drinks or where you’ll buy autochthonous jewelry and artifacts. At the southern border of town (45 min drive) the Sian Kaan Biosphere begins: a large, natural reserve where you’ll tour untouched paths, canals, cenotes and lakes. Sian Ka`an Biosphere Reserve is a 1.3 million acres of land and the words Sian Ka`an mean “where the sky is born”.
Visit the world heritage ruins of Chichén Itzá – evidence a dazzling ancient city that once centered the Mayan empire in Central America. You have to drive about 2,5 hours.
The Ruins of Coba are beautiful and mysterious – only a small fraction of the many structures have been excavated. It is more similar to Tikal in Guatemala than to its Mayan neighbors. A 45 min drive will bring you there.
Muyil is the most notable pre-Hispanic settlements of the Sian Ka’an and is situated 22 kilometers south of Tulum.
Cenotes are underwater sinkholes formed when limestone caves collapse, revealing these underground pools. The Mayans thought they were sacred – that they were portals to communicate with the gods of the underworld. The best ones around Tulum are: Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote, Calavera, Carwash and Cenote Escondido.
Valladolid – such an authentic city. The city is deeply Mayan, from the cuisine — sweet and spicy, heavy on the beans and slow-roasted pork — to the guttural consonants of the Mayan language heard on its streets.
